Growth Form: Apparently perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems erect, quadrangular, sparingly branched, densely minutely tomentose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades oblong–lanceolate, 4.5–8.5 cm long, 0.6–1.2 cm wide. Apex acute. Base truncate. Upper surfaces puberulent; lower surfaces brownish tomentose. Margins crenulate. Petioles 1–2 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers subsessile, in lax racemes up to 12 cm long, 2 flowers per verticillaster; bracts lanceolate, usually 3.5–5 mm long. Calyx actinomorphic, narrowly funnelform, 6–7 mm long, puberulent and glandular, 5-toothed, the teeth inconspicuous, very broadly deltate, 0.5–0.7 mm long, splitting longitudinally, usually persistent or sometimes only ventral 1/2 persistent. Corolla zygomorphic, bilabiate, white or sometimes tinged purple externally, tube slightly curved, 14–18 mm long, the lips apparently subequal, 3.5–5.5 mm long, puberulent externally; nectary disk often present at base of ovary, annular or developed on anterior side only. Stamens 4, both pairs of similar length or the upper pair slightly longer, ascending under the upper lip, included; filaments inserted near the throat; anthers dithecal; anther sacs divaricate, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate; ovules 1 per ovary lobe; placentation basal-axile; style 1; stigmas 2, shortly 2-lobed, the lobes clavate, pubescent in upper part, stigmatic only at the truncate apex, 1 lobe often rudimentary.

Fruit: Nutlets 1-seeded; brown; 2.5–3 mm long. Seeds with endosperm absent or scanty and oily.
